TV Tower

The Delhi TV Tower was conceived at a moment when India's broadcasting infrastructure demanded a structure of unprecedented height, performance, and civic presence. Standing 235 metres above the city, it remains one of Delhi's defining landmarks and one of the tallest reinforced concrete structures in the country. While its primary function was technical, the ambition of the project extended far beyond engineering: to create a tower whose silhouette would become inseparable from the identity of the capital. Designed by S. Ghosh & Associates in collaboration with architect Vasant Kamath, the tower reconciles the demands of broadcasting technology with architectural proportion. Every element of the composition is driven by function: the tapering concrete shaft provides structural efficiency, the enlarged head accommodates transmission equipment and service floors, while the antenna mast completes the vertical expression. Rather than concealing these necessities, the design transforms them into a coherent architectural language, giving the tower an elegance rarely associated with infrastructure. The proposal also envisioned the tower as a public destination. Beneath the transmission decks, a revolving panoramic restaurant was incorporated into the design, allowing visitors to experience Delhi from its highest vantage point. Although this public programme was ultimately omitted because of security considerations, its inclusion reflected an important belief: that infrastructure could also become civic architecture, engaging the city rather than merely serving it. The tower's restrained geometry and carefully calibrated proportions distinguish it from purely utilitarian broadcast masts. The gradual taper of the shaft, the sculpted transition into the equipment decks, and the finely detailed lattice mast produce a form that is at once technically rigorous and visually memorable. Visible from across the National Capital Region, the structure has become a constant point of orientation within Delhi's ever-changing skyline. The design was adopted by NBCC and realised as New Delhi's tallest structure, demonstrating that even the most specialised engineering projects can possess architectural clarity and urban significance. More than three decades after its completion, the Delhi TV Tower continues to stand as a rare synthesis of infrastructure, engineering, and civic monumentality.
