Integrated Passenger Terminal at Coimbatore Airport
Winning entry for the new terminal at Tamil Nadu's industrial city.
S. Ghosh & Associates surpassed several international competitors to win this competition for the Integrated Terminal at Coimbatore Airport.
Background
Coimbatore in the Southern part of India gained prominence with the rise of the textile industry in the city. Now a busy industrial metropolis, it belongs to the new breed of Indian cities with a mobile middle class population.
The competition for the New Integrated Terminal at Coimbatore Airport was hosted by the Airports Authority of India as a plan to develop several non-metro tier-II cities in the country. SGA's winning scheme appealed to the jury over the entries of several international firms participating in the competition through joint ventures because of its unique complex formal geometry that did evoked the fluidity of fabric and textile.
Development of Design
An airport terminal has an internal configuration that must be flexible to incorporate complex programmatic changes over time. For this reason, it is important to have a large span structure that spans over such flexible configurations. The roof design apart from being visible from the sky also brings light and emotion to the internal spaces.Unlike other buildings the design of the airport building therefore often begins with the roof.
In our effort to find an expression for Coimbatore that was contextual without imitating traditional architectural forms, we pursued several paths before settling into soft and light folds of cotton fabric as an expression for the lightness of the experience of flight.
